TMAI and Editorial Portavoz: partners in reaching the Spanish-speaking readers in the world
Born in Mexico City, David Coyotl has spent over 27 years in Christian publishing—developing, translating, editing, and marketing Bibles, Christian-life, academic and devotional books, and a Bible concordance. He now serves as Senior Marketing Director at Editorial Portavoz in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where he lives with his wife, Claudia, their two daughters, sons-in-law, and five grandchildren.
In 1970, Harold Kregel, American missionary to Spain, founded Editorial Portavoz in Barcelona. From its founding, the publishing house’s purpose has remained steadfast, and today it is expressed in its mission: to develop and distribute quality content—with integrity and excellence—from a reliable, biblical perspective that encourages people to know and serve Jesus Christ.
TMAI and Editorial Portavoz have worked closely together on the publication of the first two volumes of the MacArthur Old Testament Commentary, beginning in 2025 with the volume on Zechariah. This year, we published the next volume covering Jonah and Nahum. Dr. MacArthur’s legacy as an author is closely intertwined with the history of Editorial Portavoz through the publication of 59 titles, including 13 expository commentaries covering the entire New Testament and the first two volumes of the Old Testament. This body of work also includes the first volumes of the Verse by Verse with John MacArthur series—Spiritual Bootcamp and Complete in Christ—as well as the first edition of the MacArthur Study Bible.
Likewise, in 2025 Editorial Portavoz partnered with TMAI to coordinate the shipment of 3,000 packages of Spanish versions of Bible study literature to countries throughout Latin America. These packages consisted mainly of the 13 Spanish-language volumes of the MacArthur New Testament Commentary, the MacArthur Study Bible, and other additional titles, all intended to strengthen the biblical study of pastors, leaders, and congregations across the region.
These are just a few examples of the ongoing effort to bring Latin American churches content that fosters deeper, more consistent engagement with Scripture. From this effort flows an inevitable personal, local, social, and national impact—the fruit of allowing God’s Word to dwell in the hearts and minds of believers. The volumes published by TMAI are precisely designed to produce that effect, offering faithful, accessible tools for in-depth study to Spanish-speaking readers.
Latin America, with more than 500-million Spanish-speaking souls, carries a cultural heritage spanning several centuries, shaped largely by the Roman Catholic Church, which has influenced how Christianity, spirituality, salvation, and theology in general are perceived. For this reason, the region has always needed both the distribution of sound biblical content and support for the training and in-depth study of pastors and leaders so that the proclamation of the gospel, grounded in biblical truth, might truly become a catalyst for change and reinforce biblical values, both in individual lives and in society as a whole.
This series of volumes in the MacArthur Old Testament Commentary carries forward the same expository approach and biblical theology found in the volumes of the New Testament Commentary. Begun with Zechariah, and now enriched by the publication of Jonah and Nahum, this collection has been received by pastors, leaders, and students of Scripture with great enthusiasm and anticipation, as it offers a faithful resource for the rigorous, expository, and reverent study of the Old Testament.
